A Very Special Teacher

Mrs Rivett was History teacher and Head of Sixth Form whilst I attended St. Andrew's School in Malton, Yorkshire between 1974 and 1981. Her History lessons were fascinating (she could always be relied on to go off curriculum with entertaining stories about any period), and she was responsible for guiding me through O Level and A Level History.

As Head of Sixth Form, she was a doughty support through a very difficult period for me, and was always available to listen. She and Leonard hosted some memorable stays at Wyedale Hall for Sixth Formers; Leonard's home made wine and the quizzes using their holiday photos are fixed in my memory. I also recall a wonderful trip to London to visit the Benin Bronzes at the British Museum, followed by Jesus Christ Superstar in the West End.

She kept in touch after school with her newsy Christmas letters, full of details of her packed retirement. I was lucky enough to visit her when she was living in Woodthorpe; she always maintained a bright interest in the lives of old girls, teachers and the world at large.
